BMP and PNG formats are popular raster formats, but neither offers as many advantages as SVG. SVG is a modern vector format supported by all major web browsers and vector editing software - its lossless compression ensures an exact copy of its source image upon encoding and decoding; unlike rasterized images that store an array of pixels arranged grid-like onto which increasing their size could cause pixelation.

Inkscape can convert PDF documents to SVG if they contain vector graphics; however, if they contain raster images or photographs this method won't work; to achieve this task you will either need to screen capture or perform tracing; for instance if your document comes from USGS maps LightBurn should be used instead for import purposes.
Avoid JPEG files; they tend to load slowly and lose nuance in their tracing of complex shapes and gradients, especially those containing gradients. SVG is an infinitely scalable vector format, while Vector Magic may offer superior results by reducing nodes needed and eliminating artifacts caused by other auto-tracing programs.
To convert PDF to SVG, a program such as pdf2svg or Inkscape may be needed. pdf2svg supports Linux, Windows and Mac OSX while other operating systems may require using dvisvgm (part of TexLive) which offers the --optimize=all option that can make the resultant SVG smaller without perceivable quality degradation.
